Malibu Surfing Association - Frequently Asked Questions
When was the MSA Founded?
1961. The MSA is one of California's oldest surfing clubs in existence.
What advice do you have for someone just learning?
First, make sure you get the right gear - check out our support page for local businesses and corporations who've generously given to MSA. Second, for your own safety, and for the safety of those already in the water, don't learn at Malibu. There are numerous breaks within a 10-minute drive which are better suited for beginners. Third, learn the basics of surf etiquette.
Does the MSA give surf lessons?
No. The MSA is not a teaching club. If you are interested in receiving surfing instruction, the MSA recommends the use of an approved (by LACDBH) instructor. If you have questions regarding where to find qualified instructors, please drop the President an email.
I want to join the MSA. How do I find a sponsor?
Membership in MSA is by invitation only. Please visit our membership page for more information.
Why doesn't the MSA do something about the water quality at Malibu?
The MSA is actively engaged in a number of issues regarding water quality at Surfrider Beach. Through partnerships with Heal the Bay, Santa Monica Baykeeper, Surfrider Foundation and its West LA / Malibu Chapter, we maintain a focus on wastewater treatment within Malibu's Civic Center area. At an individual level, we make sure this work continues off the beach: managing what makes its way into local storm drains.
I'm not a surfer but I want to help the MSA. What can I do?
MSA is an all volunteer, non-profit organization; we're grateful for the support of those who believe in our mission and programs. More information on supporting MSA can be found here.
How do I get to Malibu?
Follow PCH to Sunset. No need to go any further -- it's right there below Gladstones. Hah.
